Program Description:

Sexual abuse is a significant public health problem in the United States and across the world. Significant physical, emotional, social, cognitive and behavioral problems are related to sexual abuse trauma. This six hour course will equip mental health providers with a foundation for treatment of sexual abuse survivors by providing the basic components of Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) as well as discuss methods used by this agency in the treatment of trauma and family reunification.

Goals:

  • Gain an understanding of the impact of sexual abuse on survivors and their families.
  • Gain knowledge and develop skills for the assessment, diagnosis and treatment planning of sexual abuse survivors.
  • Gain knowledge of Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), it’s effectiveness in treating victims of sexual abuse and practice therapy techniques associated with the treatment model.
  • Gain knowledge regarding reunification in cases of sexual abuse survivors and the necessary treatment process prior to reunification attempts.

 Objectives:

  • Give two examples of the emotional, physical, cognitive and social impact of sexual abuse.
  • Explain why assessment is the cornerstone to the treatment process and identify key issues relevant to the assessment of sexual abuse.
  • Describe characteristics of children and families who would benefit from TF-CBT.
  • Describe the treatment components of TF-CBT and demonstrate skills relevant to each treatment component.
  • Given a case scenario, evaluate the role of family in the treatment process and propose an appropriate course of action.    
  • Describe the factors that contribute to the decision to reunify and create a plan for the reunification process.
